Zemplen. Winter 2010/2011

Zemplen. Winter 2010/2011

Hungary. My little „warm country”. I go there often for the sun and the wine. Often – but only in the summertime. I gorge myself there on sweet tomatoes, juicy paprica, and sweet smelling melons. I love it when grape juice runs through my fingers and down my chin, when I get warm inside and fuse with the world around me.
Everthing is sticky, everything smells, arid dry ground, the chirp of crickets in the heat of day and delicate evening warmth. We sit on a veranda entwined with vine. The earth breaths on the remembered light, the colors are heavy. We drink Tokaji wine – the sun sealed in an oak barrel, ageing in the coolness of the cellars. Sweltering golden joy.

For the first time in my life I went to my little paradise in the winter, but it turned out that the country had fallen asleep. It froze, tucked in a cold dump mist.
